Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello, I'm Jackie, I'm 40 and I've had type 1 diabetes since I was 17. I probably never gave the diabetes the respect it deserved, I looked after it but never gave it any consideration. After having two children and handling life I find the words "silent killer" now haunting me. I find my diabetes is changing and I don't understand it as well as I thought I did. I'm hoping to find some answers to my questions on here, and I do have alot of questions!

Morning Jackie, welcome to the forum🙂 I moved your post to its own thread so people wouldn't miss it. Looking forward to hearing your experiences and sharing the ups and downs with you!

Thanks

As a newbie on the forums any tips or advice on how to make best use of it would be really appreciated

welcome jackie
don't worry we were all newbies once!! best thing to do is have a browse around the threads..ask questions or comment if you want, by using the reply button...or start your own questions in a new thread ...remember no question is silly here someone will always come along with some helpful advice information or a BIG HUG when needed...its ok to rant too!

Hi Jackie, as am64 says, have a browse around and comment where you wish. You have long experience of diabetes, so must have a lot of experiences that you can share with those more recently diagnosed. Plus, you may be surprised at how much you can learn from those same people as often the longer-diagnosed people are less familiar with the most up to date thinking and treatments. Also - have some fun or a good gripe whenever you want, you are with people who 'get it' and will understand where you are coming from. Join us in the pub in the 'Off the Subject' section (The Glucphage and Glargine) and relax with a virtual carb-free tipple of your choice!🙂

Hi Jackie and a warm welcome to the forum, like many of us the feelings of being scared nervous and very confused have all hit us at some point, hopefully we can help you out and answer all your questions as best you can x

Hi Jackie, welcome to the forum.

Hi Jackie Welcome, and your in the wright place for help and support
🙂

Hi Jackie,
I related very much to your message......I'm 43, diagnosed at 19, not always given diabetes enough respect, 2 children - all that went ok though they were easy to concieve, big but no special care etc. However, maybe it's our age, but very aware of the future and scared of being dependent, sick etc. 'Silent killer' after so many years gets me going as well. I do pay more attention to diabetes now though and I'm aware of changes esp of hypo symptoms. I am doing a DAFNE type course at the moment (over 4 wks) which is helping to update me and has so far shown me I'm probably taking too much insulin and its helping 'update' me a bit on all this carb stuff which I think I need. However on meeting other type 1's at the group I also recognize I am not doing so bad under the circumstances compared to some! I would recommend it though. Anyway just wanted to tell you I completely related to your post........keep going x
