Good morning all, I'm just saying hello.
I'm a T2 and have been for many years now. I want to get my numbers down and drop some weight. So hopefully the motinvation & support I need is here. I'm currently doing low carb & shakes (having done Keto for a couple of years). I've only just started so too early to tell what's working. I did shakes some time ago and got amazing results for both weigh & BG numbers. Sadly as often happens it all went out the window. However, each day is a new opportunity to get back at it..... so I am!

Welcome to the forum
I think that is often the problem with the shakes approach as some people find it hard to make the needed changes to their diet that is going to be sustainable for life so it is vital to find something which is enjoyable.
I have found low carb to be a very sustainable regime and it is now my new normal way of eating.
I followed the principals in the link https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ which is a low carb approach. There are meal plans for those who prefer a structured regime but you can still do your own thing just following the ethos.
What is your HbA1C and are you taking any medication.
Do you have a home testing blood glucose monitor as people find that a useful tool for keeping on track and finding not only what foods are not wise to have but which are fine.

Hey, my Hba1c was 52 at my last check. I take Metofmin, Gliclazide & Dapagliflozin (Forxiga). I've been testing for 20 years and am lucky enough to get test stips on prescription so I can experiment with foods. Rice Pasta & Oats are big spikers for me, but new potatoes (3 or 4) barely make a difference, howewever I rarely eat them. It's funny how we're all different in what we can tollerate.

I do well enough on low carb, and still eat some "keto" meals, but I do find keto a bit much at times if I do a whole week of it. That said, I used to get great numbers very quickly. The shakes I have don't seem to spike me so that's good. I have one or two a day then a low carb meal. For me it's about making it a habit and planning meals in advance - if I don't all kinds of mayhem can happen 😱.

I will check out the freshwell link - thank you.

52mmol/mol is towards the lower end of the diabetes zone, so it sounds like you are doing well - has that been coming down since you’ve added a few more meds into the mix?

With the blend of meds you are currently on, you’d need to be a little cautious about reducing your carbs below a certain point - as there could be a risk of hypos if you restrict too much.

Well I've been on them all for a long time now, the only change in the last few years is that the Gliclazide has been reduced. Even when I was doing keto my numbers never dropped below 5 but I was warned about Forxiga dropping them. My aim is to try and get off at least one of the meds, but given the length of time I've been diabetic it may not be possible, but that's my target

Good luck with your changes.

Forxiga can be one of the class of medications that may increase risk of DKA even if glucose levels are not elevated. This risk can be particularly increased where a low carb menu is being followed I think?

Morning, yes, I did have that discussion with my DN - I'm fortunate to have a good one and we discuss rather than her just talk lol. Forxiga is one that needs keeping an eye one for sure.
