More than 800,000 patients were forced to go to hospital last year because they failed to get a doctor’s appointment.

The influx heaped pressure on stretched A&E units, with almost a million people waiting more than four hours for treatment.

It comes ahead of a major speech by Labour leader Ed Miliband tomorrow on the crisis facing GPs and emergency departments.
