Having had that horrid adventure with the Naproxen causing me such awful pain I called the surgery for advice. The result is they've taken me off Naproxen and prescribed Codeine instead. This has me a bit concerned because it's an opiate (addiction problems if prescribed for too long) and can also cause hypos. I'm planning to take it, but I'm worrying what I can do to reduce the risk of hypos given how good my numbers have been of late.

Any ideas? Can I haz chipz?

Hope you don't get any hypos. My suggestion is to keep an eye on things and adjust as neceesarry

I'd never heard that about hypos (probably should read those leaflets more carefully!)

I hope these do the trick - without any side effects or hypos. Xx

Worth a try if you are in pain but as suggested keep a close eye on BG's.
Just wanted to say watch for constipation, codeine is renouned for that 🙂

I've never heard about codeine causing hypos (not to say it doesn't happen though) and to be honest I've never had a hypo problem from taking it - I always use a paracetamol-codeine tablet or two to blast through a hangover.

I think the only way to deal with this though is through experimentation. I'd be very cautious about recommending you eat more or alter your insulin levels as you simply won't know what the action profile of codeine might be on your blood sugar. Therefore I'd just carry on as normal, test regularly and then alter your basal (and potentially boluses) down accordingly. In any case, the first line of treatment should be to reduce your insulin intake, rather than eat more food.

I'm currently taking Codeine and it causes my BG to rise quite significantly. I know everyone is different but definitely no hypos for me!
