Hi All,

Hi, I've just received my DIAB1 form from the DVLA. Last year I had problems with a badly worded question on hypo awareness and my licence was immediately revoked. Fortunately I successfully appealed and was given a 12 month licence.

That question seems to have been removed now, but I'm concerned over the question 'Have you had an episode of hypoglycaemia?' Obviously like everybody I do sometimes have blood sugar readings of below 4, but if I tick the 'Yes' box I'm afraid they'll automatically revoke my licence again. I'm not quite sure what they're trying to do with this question (maybe they're just interested in disabling hypos which I haven't had for nearly 20 years), so I'm not sure how to answer it. Any ideas?

If you go look in the driving section you will find a link, which tells you how to answer the question. 🙂

Magic, thanks Sue. I've just taken a look and I think they're being too vague. What exactly do they mean by 'an episode of hypoglycaemia'? If I tick 'Yes' (because I sometimes drop below 4), would they see that as grounds to revoke my licence?

Has anybody else renewed their licence in the last couple of months?

3a. Are you aware of the symptoms of hypoglycaemia? Yes No e.g. sweating, shakiness, hungry, palpitations, tingling lips
3b. Have you had an episode of hypoglycaemia? Yes No IF NO, CONTINUE TO SECTION 2
3c. Have you had more than one episode of severe Yes No hypoglycaemia (requiring assistance from another person) in the last 12 months? Do not count episodes where you were given help but could have helped yourself.
3d. If YES to 3c, provide dates of two most recent events: Date Date
3e. Do you get warning symptoms of hypoglycaemia? Yes No
3f. If YES to 3e, are you always aware? Yes No

I think you are reading to much into the question.
It asks if you have had an episode of hypoglycaemia. So you answer yes and tick the box you are aware of hypo symptoms. (if you tick no you hypo unaware so bye bye licence)
Just make sure you don't tick the severe box or it's cheerio to your licence.

Thanks again Sue. I'm probably just being paranoid because of my experience last year - I ticked the box saying yes, I had experienced hypo unawareness (a number of years ago). I think they took that as meaning that I was hypo unaware now. That's why I'm probably over-thinking the whole thing!

Cheers!

DVLA has a new CEO. Oliver Morley's prevoius position was CEO at The National Archives. During his tenure at TNA he was well liked and a good communicator with staff and readers. Perhaps if we wrote to Oliver Morley we could suggest that the form be made clearer without questions that cause confusion.

That sounds hopeful. Thanks for the advice all - I'll let you know how i get on.
