People often first learn they suffer from diabetes during eye exams, said ophthalmologist James Powers of Healthy Vision Institute.
Just ask his mother, Teresa Habib. In the late 1990s when Powers was in training, he provided family members with a new diagnostic exam at the time.
The test revealed his mother had diabetic retinopathy, an abnormal growth of new blood vessels bleeding inside her eyes. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading cause of blindness.
Later, she survived a stroke and quadruple coronary artery bypass before getting her diabetes under control. Early intervention means she is still around to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary soon with husband Peter.
Her struggles inspired Powers to become a vitreo-retinal surgeon, a specialist in diabetic eye care, and start the institute, of which he is co-founder and medical director. The institute specializes in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy among people 55 or older at its west Pasco location, Dunedin and St. Petersburg.
