Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed as insulin dependant at age 17, off insulin at 25, diabetes controlled with tablets untl 2001, then metformin until this spring when someoby mentioned MODY (maturity onset diabetes of the young) to me - I didn't fit the bill as a Type 2 (skinny). After genetic testing I saw the consultant this week.

He told me MODY isn't type 1 or type 2 but a distinct clinical entity.

However neither my GP surgery nor in fact diabetes UK seem to acknowledge this - so my GP records had me as Type 2 since 1973 (in fact diagnosed Type 1) and hadn't even heard of MODY. Same with DUK website - you have to tick either type 1 or type 2 when you register (although they do have info on MODY if you know to search for it ... which means you need to have heard of it already .... )

The correct diagnosis is crucial as the treatment for when the diabetes is out of control is very different.

PS I sacked my last GP after seeing him for the first time this year re diabetes as I was training for the London Marathon (DUK place, I did it!) and want advice re diet etc - he said I may need to go onto insulin and need MORE metformin! (also didn't know what a marathon was!).

Hello Anne - welcome to the forum! I know of at least one member who has MODY, so hopefully she will be along to answer any questions you may have. The knowledge of some doctors is truly appalling, especially when it falls outside the usual, straightforward types. Good to hear that you've finally got a diagnosis that makes some sense and allows for proper treatment.

p.s. I'm from your neck of the woods - Brighouse! Congratulations on running the marathon! 🙂

hi and a warm welcome anne

well done also on the marathon run x

I'm not that fast with the keyboard for replies - thanks Staff - and can someone tell me how to change the "Junior Member" to "Senior Member" in my profile thingy?

Hi Anne and welcome to DS 🙂

I have MODY too, and we have one other member that i know of. Do you know which type of MODY you have?

In the past for DUK you had to choose either type 1 or 2, now on most of their things you choose 'other' as an option, I got a letter published in Balance about this about 4 years ago.

congratualtions on the marathon!
