Cancer is not up there with the most likely explanations for what caused the mass extinction 66m years ago of the T rex and the triceratops. That said, at least one species of dinosaur suffered from blood-vessel tumours – and a 1.7m-year-old toe with bone cancerwas discovered in 2016 at a South African world heritage site.

Cancer may have been more common in ancient times than we will ever know, because fossilisation will have obliterated most evidence of the disease. However, misinterpretations of some small studies and claims by self-styled wellness gurus that cancer is “a man-made disease” have fed the belief that cancer is modern. While that does not mean anyone concerned about cancer should visit their local natural history museum for information, thinking of cancer as a result of modern life causes unnecessary fear. Here are some modern myths about cancer.

The reason for all the fuss about mobile phones is because the thickos in the press, and in some under qualified scientists, is that they can’t distinguish between ionising and non ionising radiation. Radio waves are non ionising. That is, they don’t have enough energy to split molecules such as DNA. Ionising radiation can.

We know that radio waves of varying frequency, that power our radios and television, are completely harmless because the world is full of them. That’s why you can listen to foreign radio stations on your radio. This has been true for near 80 years. They pass through you all day, every day, without harm. As do neutrinos, which emerge from the depths of the universe, travel all the way here and pass through us without slowing down. All day, every day. Despite their speed, their energy is minute, as their mass.

And organic food may not have had any ‘chemical ‘ treatment, but when I was a lad most food was organic by modern standards. That’s why I would find occasional apples or plums containing a slew of insect eggs or emerging maggots. That’s why organic food is expensive - more wastage. I prefer eating apples with confidence. After washing, of course.🙄

As Admin on a cancer site, there isn’t a day goes by that we don’t have questions, suggestions and observations about some magic ingredient, procedure or way of life that is the panacea of all ills.

The alkaline diet is often peddled by pseudo scientists who convince people sugar is feeding cancer cells and there’s a need to transform the blood into a more alkaline than acidic state. However there’s absolutely no scientific basis for this myth and acidic and alkaline compounds from food have little or no effect on blood pH. Blood actually has its own built-in buffer system to keep your internal pH just right. As long as you don’t have any serious conditions (like kidney disease or electrolyte deficiencies), you can safely assume that the pH balance of your body is on autopilot.

Trying telling some people that however and there’s still believers who are convinced kale smoothies and jumping on a trampoline is more curative than chemo!
