Hi,

Got a shock this morning while making my son's packed lunch with Mission Deli Wheat & White Mini Wraps - the carbs per wrap had supposedly doubled to 30g! I weighed the wrap - it was only 30g so I applied the carb ratio of 50g/100g and came up with a more expected 15 gC per wrap. Major hypo averted.

Phoned the company - they had already withdrawn the product, informed Diabetes UK and were reviewing procedures. They were taking the problem seriously but didn't know how to get the information out to diabetics who might be affected.

So, is there any service out there that keeps us informed when errors like this happen (or when manufacturers of drinks used for hypo treatments suddenly halve their carb level - Lucozade, I'm looking at you!). Allergy UK have an allergy alert service - is there anything similar for us?

Hi @FrenziedYak, welcome to the forum 🙂 Well spotted! I think the Lucozade thing received quite a lot of publicity, but things like this are harder to deal with, I would think. There are about 400k Type 1s in the country and possibly only a small fraction of those would consume certain things, so only a small number of people might be affected, and the problem might be disseminating the information to them. Perhaps @Hannah DUK knows of something Diabetes UK have in operation?

I missed the publicity around Lucozade - it was only luck that I was reviewing my son's care plan and was being thorough and double checking everything and realised the dosage we were using wasn't giving the carbs I was expecting. It would be nice to be able to sign up to a "push" service that informed you when products carb values change, especially as they're all reducing sugar now (a good thing!). Diabetes UK helpline weren't aware of anything and said they would put it into their weekly review as feedback.

Well the reduction of sugar in ALL fizzy drinks was well publicised everywhere, not just in the 'diabetes' media - shedloads of athletes drink 'sports' drinks and Lucozade says it's an 'Energy' drink on the big label on the front of every bottle. Nowhere at all does it say it's for treating hypos cos they never have marketed it as such, why would they when there are comparatively such a low proportion of people who might need to treat hypos?

Us old uns of course remember when the only time you ever saw a bottle of Lucozade was when you were ill and needed 'building up' - so it was never a 'normal' fizzy drink, although they were only bought as a treat. otherwise it was Corporation Pop (tap water) or squash!

Sorry - we simply HAVE to read labels if we happen to be one of those affected.

It is not something that we currently have in place at the moment, although it is a really interesting idea. Unfortunately, companies do on occasion change or alter the total grams of carbs. It would be good to alert people of this, but we may not manage to reach everyone, or even we may not always be made aware by companies.
We encourage people to always check food labels and part of our current Food Upfront campaign, is to call for companies to display the information about carbs more clearly, making it easier for you to quickly find the information you need.

Gosh, first time on the DOC and I've been "trolled" (or is it "flamed"?) already!! I check a lot of labels but I guess we all are guilty of getting to know a particular product and then not checking it every single time (aren't we???).

I must admit ! very rarely check the labels on familiar items, so changes would more than likely pass me by - especially if they changed the sugar content of jelly babies, which is my 'go to' hypo treatment 😱

I think JBs are safe for now. Had some earlier on. When I shook the bag to get some out, four green ones fell out. I thought of you immediately, Northie, as I munched them happily.

Yes, true enough for me. For those newly diagnosed who may be studying every packet in detail then mis-labelled products like the wrap then the effects could be greater. I think after a while we recognise what items are likely to have in them, e.g. wholemeal bread slices - 15-17g and when checking the label as you did would notice something didn't seem right. I've always found it's never been an exact science and even if we weigh things down to the milligramme there are too many other variables affecting blood glucose but certainly there's no excuses for incorrect labelling of values.
