Hello, I've been missing in action for a long time - loads of things have got in the way, some OK, some not so good - but that's life. I would like to come back to the forum if you'll have me?

Feeling quite despondent today and could do with a bit of support please.
My control has been good - I thought - but have been feeling strange over the last few weeks and I've scared myself a few times. The metformin has been working but having had my latest HbA1c result this morning of 11.9, I'm really miserable. I guessed it would be up a little, due to recent illness and some family problems, but was shocked at the number. So, I've now been started on 80mg Gliclazide a day - didn't want this as I'm still battling with my weight (lost 2 stones over the past 4 months :D) but I can't ignore these results. My DSN wants to review the situation in November, so I need to get my act together.
At the moment I just feel a bit stunned, wasn't expecting to hear that things have deteriorated and more meds would be needed so soon.
Didn't mean to write so much - just needed to 'talk' - it gets a bit lonely here sometimes. Thanks for listening.

Hi Karen, lovely to hear from you again, but sorry to hear it is not with better news. Of course you are very welcome back!

There are a couple of other members who are going through exactly the same thing here at the moment - both have just been started on gliclazide and are starting to show some good improvements 🙂 Hopefully, you will soon see the same.

Presumably, now you are on gliclazide you will have been prescribed some test strips and given a meter? It would be worth reading up on Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter to take a fresh perspective on things. You might even find Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker a good read, even though it is your 5th year - sometimes starting back with the basics can help to motivate you. Don't dwell on the past, it is behind you - look forward to much better levels and feeling much happier and healthier! 🙂

Hello Karen, I hope things start to improve with the latest drugs. 🙂 There have been a few on the forum who have started Gliclazide recently.

Hello Karen and welcome back.🙂

Hello Karen

You sounds a similar place to we're I was a couple of weeks ago. I had let things slip and my levels had got very high without me realising it was only when I started getting those high symptoms blurred vision, thrush and feeling tired after food I realised i cannot ignore the big D anymore.

So i booked my hbA1c 6 weeks early and my results came back the same as yours. I have been put on 1 40mg Gliclazide each morning and have been taking them for about 10 days and have already seen improvements. I need to test more now which is taking some getting use to but is keeping me more focused on what I am eating and encoraging me to exercising.

Good luck

Thanks for your replies and welcomes.
I was given a SuperCheck2/lancets/strips from the DSN on Tuesday - not heard of this one before, but got it up and running ready. Although I think it's an interesting idea to have on a meter, I had to disable the voiceover, don't like machines that talk to me 🙂. Still prefer my Abbott Freestyle freedom meter, but having been given free items, I'll not be ungrateful.
Re-reading the book by Gretchen Baker was a good idea - thanks Alan. Had forgotten lots of her good advice.
Sheilagh, yep, all those same symptoms were back again, but hopefully being back on track now will banish them again.
So, tomorrow I start with new tablet regime, testing (without breaking the bank), lower carbs, and more determination. Wish me luck!!

Good luck Karen 🙂

Good luck Karen! Hope all goes well for you, let us know how you get on 🙂
