Missed NHS appointments have cost the health service in Wales at least ?67m over the past five years, new figures have revealed.

The startling figure ? which is likely to be far higher when figures for every Welsh health board are included ? have prompted a political debate during which Health Minister Mark Drakeford dismissed calls to charge for missed appointments.

Statistics obtained by the Welsh Conservatives revealed that, since 2007, nearly one million hospital appointments have been missed in four of Wales? boards ? Hywel Dda, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU), Betsi Cadwaladr and Cwm Taf ? at an estimated cost of ?67.1m.
