Really messed up here 😡.
Have lunch at 2:30pm - 3:00pm then tea at 7:00pm - 7:30pm however the day has gone on and am just having lunch/tea whatever you want to call it. So I'm missing a meal & QA injection. Take BI at 10:00pm. I'm off out this evening also but not for a meal just to see a gig.
BS was 12.8 which I presume is because I've not eaten since breakfast. Had QA dose for meal and a correction.

What would you do in this situation?

Thanks for any help 🙂

Hi Gill,

Why do you think there is a problem with missing a meal?🙂Bev

Hi Gill the beauty of MDi is that you can miss meals you just need to inject short acting insulin for the carbs you eat and corrections. I often only eat a maximum of two meals a day.

Thank you for your quick replies 🙂.

I was just under the impression that I should always have 3 meals (breakfast, lunch & tea) per day otherwise I'm missing out with a QA injection 😱.

Like you say the beauty of MDI is to just inject for the carbs which are eaten.
I'm always panicking if I've missed breakfast or lunch. Tea is one meal which I always have.

Hi Gill,

If you think about it - when you are ill or off your food you dont eat then - its just the same thing. The BI keeps you ticking over - but when you eat it cant cope with food which is why you need your QA to cover the food - so if you dont eat you dont need the QA.🙂 So BI (or basal) is for background and QA (or bolus) is for food. I hope you enjoy yourself at the gig!🙂Bev

Thanks again Bev and thanks for saying to enjoy the gig, which I'm intending to do. I'm going to another one tomorrow evening 😱!!! They're both local bands.

This evening the band are called Maine. You can find them on NWB (north west bands) website. The singer used to sing for another local band called Phoenix - we're seeing them NYE!

That's the one we're seeing on Saturday - http://www.kingpintheband.co.uk/index.php?pid=calendar

Gill - if you consistently rise when you miss a meal and QA jab, but are consistently going hypo when you have your three meals a day it suggests to me that either the carb counts are not right, or that your insulin:carb meal ratios might need looking at.

I'm OK when missing a meal bolus testing and not doing anything much else, but if I decided to have a day at the office or do anything particularly energetic, I'd be in trouble.

Therefore when it's a normal activity day and I want to bolus test, I opt for eg a late lunch following an earlier brekkie.

I def can't go from brekkie all the way to dinner without shoving some fuel in to keep my liver's mind off shoving his oar in.

But it can just be a biscuit grabbed with a cuppa, with the appropriate bolus and it's enough to keep me steady.

Gill, I was thinking about your situation this morning and I started to wonder...

From these and other posts there seem to be 2 things going on... If you miss a meal your BG seems to rise (either not enough basal, or your liver wading in), but overnight you are going low despite recently cutting right back on Lantus.

I had years of trouble off and on with Lantus and waking lows, in the end following a blog/forum suggestion I tried injecting my Lantus at breakfast time (in a different spot to my QA jab). For me it more or less solved the waking lows completely. While Lantus's profile is 'quite' flat it isn't completely. And it seems that for me (and maybe for you) it was giving a boost of activity just when I didn't need it. By injecting at breakfast time the dose was beginning to fade at the point where I needed less basal active and suited me much better. Might be worth considering?

Hmmm yes may be worth considering. Thanks for thinking about my situation by the way.
When you started injecting your lantus at breakfast time did you have to bring the time of injecting forward by an hour each day? This is what I've heard.

Here's the last few days results. Also I've reduced my lantus again last night by 2u so from 18u to 16u!

I didn't bother. I just swapped to the morning and was careful for a few days in case of overlap/Lantus lag. If you are already having lows I guess you could simply skip/delay the last evening injection until the morning? You'd have to decide what was best for you I guess.

Thanks Mike!
