I have been on insulin for only 2 weeks and still getting use to it. I have forgotten to do my injection before my tea this evening, is this OK or do I need to do anything? I have run out of insulin in the pen I was using and have had to take out another one from the fridge, but I can't use this until tomorrow morning as it is too cold. Can someone help?

Hi Pletford. Welcome 🙂

What insulin is it you're using ?

Rob

Just to add that as far as I know, you can use any insulin straight from the frridge, btu it might feel a bit chilly going in.

Don't want to offer any further advice without knowing what insulin it is.🙂

Hmm. Not sure what you'd need to do with humulin but it's important to inject asap.

I would guess you'd probably inject your normal amount, test every hour or 2 or if you feel low or particularly high and hope for the best.

I take humalog, which is a very different insulin.

Your humulin M3 is a mixture of fast and slow acting insulins but mine is purely fast, so I can use it to adjust my dose to match my meals in amount and timing.

Just to check. You are T1 since sitagliptin and metformin are more commonly (but not exclusively) used by T2s.🙂

Hiya

You need to take it asap, it's had time to thaw out now, can't see why you'd need to wait that long anyway, will soon warm up once it gets 'in' - and if you don't have it you will be high as a kite if you ate any carbs. And because it also contains Isophane, you won't have enough insulin in you to keep your organs supplied overnight.

I agree Isophane (the cloudy part of the mix) doesn't mix well with the Soluble (the clear part) straight out of the fridge, but by now - it definitely will. Make sure you roll the cartridge (or the whole pen if the cartridge is already in the pen) thoroughly and then hold the pen upright for c. 20 secs, check that the cloud is staying suspended in the cartridge and as long as it doesn't all sink back down to the bottom, you are OK to go.

You can use insulin straight from the fridge - I was always told that it would be more uncomfortable, but have never noticed that myself.

While my situation (using short acting insulin x 3 per day, plus long acting x2 per day, rather than your bimodal insulin, which contains some of each type) is different, the principles are the same. I always have a spare cartridge of each of the types of insulin I use out of fridge, in pencil case, which goes everywhere with me - I reasoned that I never knew when I might need to stay out overnight and didn't want to be separated from long acting left at home. It's not happened often, but was pleased to have some long acting with me when invited to go kayaking some 12 years ago - and we're still together 🙂

I'm on 2 a day mixed injections and missed my pre-breakfast one just after I first started on them. I rang my hospital clinic nurse and was told to inject if it was within one hour after eating, otherwise to leave it until my next scheduled injection that night. Obviously I would run higher during the day but it would do no harm on that occasion but not to make a habit of it !
