Since winning the 2014 Miss Ghana USA title last July, Akua Tokunboh, has eagerly been looking forward to flying home to carry out her diabetes awareness and education campaign that she pledged to do.
Akua Tokunboh, a pharmacist based in the USA, beat 10 other contestants to emerge winner of the competition held at the Alvin Ailey theatre, in New York, in July, this year.
In an interview with Showbiz, she revealed that she selected the topic of diabetes awareness because of her grandmother who passed away due to complications arising from the disease while she (Akua) was studying abroad.
“From personal experiences as a Board Certified Pharmacist in the United States, I monitor medication use of patients in an underserved area on a daily basis. I have observed diabetes on the rise and have noted the need for the proper management of diabetes, so that any fatal yet avoidable complications can be addressed and prevented,” she said.
