Twenty-four million children and adults in the U.S. live with diabetes. It?s a staggering number and a disease most people really don?t understand.
As the wife of an insulin-dependent diabetic ? my husband Mark was diagnosed at age 13 ? I can attest to difficulty living with the disease and the toll it takes on the family.
Most people think a diabetic just has to avoid sugar to be OK. But there?s so much more to managing diabetes.
The timing and amount of insulin taken relative to the amount and type of food eaten is a complicated equation. Taking too little insulin or taking it too soon can result in high blood sugar. Taking too much or taking it too early before food is eaten can cause blood sugar to plummet, leaving a person shaky, sweaty and disoriented.
