In order to close the ?30 billion funding shortfall, the NHS must seriously rethink its approach to patient information, argues John Gurnett, Healthcare Director at EMC.

News last week that the NHS faces a funding shortfall of 30 billion pounds over the next eight years was chilling for those working in the healthcare sector in the UK. Even the most merciless of private healthcare providers, who might otherwise be relishing the thought of such a failure in the state sector, could not rejoice at the news that the NHS is set to fall so spectacularly short of its budget (and, hence, care) objectives.

The medical infrastructure and supply chain in the country simply isn't equipped to deal with change of that scale and speed and, frankly, neither are our citizens' personal finances. What's needed is a radical overhaul of the NHS approach to supportive care and preventative medicine. That, in turn, will require a completely new attitude to technology.
