MORE than 130,000 EU students and rich Europeans will have to take out health insurance while in the UK under plans to protect the NHS.
The crackdown is part of a wider drive to stop Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants flooding into Britain when restrictions on them are lifted at the end of this year.
Tough rules on NHS access have been drawn up by ministers to ensure our generous benefits and health service are not luring immigrants here.
Immigration minister Mark Harper said existing treaties make it clear EU students should not be a burden on us.

Jobless Romanians and Bulgarians to be banned from using the NHS? Yeah, right

The sense that politicians will promise almost anything to make a problem disappear, a rampant abuse of power in the New Labour years, is yet to be entirely banished by the Coalition.

A classic example is this morning's report that Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants who are not working will be required to buy private medical insurance to cover the cost of any treatment on the NHS. This, I would suggest, is not in any way, shape or form true. GPs in England were told in October that they should register anybody who asked, allowing them free primary care on the NHS. It is an odd system which permits health tourism with the sole exception of those tourists from two southern European states.
Then there's the EU. The rules as they stand do not allow us to choose to selectively apply European law because the The Sun doesn't like the look of the beneficiaries.
