You can make these with spuds, parsnip, carrot or sweet potato (yummy), or apple* (double yummy).

Get a sheet of greaseproof paper and fold it into a concertina shape (folds should be about 1.5" deep). Slice the veg thinly and sprinkle with your chosen condiment, salt, pepper, paprika, parmesan, whatever you fancy. Nutmeg or cinnamon works well on the apple.

Arrange the slices in the folds so they don't touch and zap them at full power for about 8-10 seconds, if they're not quite crisp give them a few more seconds. The wetter the slices, the longer it will take so leave stuff like vinegar till after you zap them.

* Needs to be a pretty dry apple like a Cox, which is quite sweet already so you won't need to add sugar.

PS, they go soft after a while, if they do, just zap them again.

Oooh they sound lovely and healthy too! Thanks - will give them a try.🙂Bev

ty alison once again your recipes sound yummy , healthy too :D

I've made these quite a few times before, but didn't know about the greaseproof paper 'concertina' - great tip, thanks, will DEFinitely try that next time.

Cheers.

xx

I like crisps, so maybe it is time to experiment. We have a slicer which cuts things vey thin. We experimented with making them in the oven too, some worked better than others.

im making the apple crisps later with lad i told him about them and he seemed extremely keen , shall let you knwo if sucsess/failiure :D

How did it go? I love getting feedback.

Just came across this - i love the veg crisps I get in sainsbury's, so will give tis a go. Has anyone tried beetroot or jerusalem artichokes?

Hi Alison, tried these today with parsnips and jerusalem artichokes, but they kept catching fire! Maybe I didn't cut them thin enough? Zapped them on full power, but it was taking a minute or two? Any suggestions?

Catching fire!😱 I've never had that problem. Timings can vary depending on the veg used* and they do need to be very thin indeed and not touching each other and the power of your microwave will make a difference too. I've done parsnip in the past and it took approx 2 minutes for a small batch. You were using greaseproof paper, yes?

* The wetter it is, the longer it takes. Try drying them on some paper towel before you zap them.

I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Thanks Alison. Yes, I used greaseproof - I'll have another go, perhaps reducing the power a bit too. It's funny because I would call myself a good cook when making things from scratch, but when I cook 'convenience' food, I often overcook it, and perhaps it's the same with these!

It's not one of those combi-ovens is it? If you're half as daft as I am, you might have selected 'roast' instead of 'zap'. I've done that in the past.😱

Hi, it is, but I've never used the grill bit - it was the only microwave the right size for my dishes! I tried again, using a potato peeler for thiner slices and drying them off with paper towel. Also tried lowering the power. The peices tended to burn in the middle while still being soft around the edges - I'll keep experimenting! The microwave may be a bit knackered. Failing that, I'll try them in the oven next time it's on.

Oooh, I am going to try these. I miss crisps more than chocolate.
