Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 weeks ago .
I am 57 and classed as obese,so as you can see lots to tackle.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Miakat.
Yeah, loadsa support - just ask away! I was diagnosed type 2 at Christmas and the doc wants me to take tablets. The nurse - who I trust more - warned me about side effects, so my first bit of advice is be careful about medication, some, like metformin, have nasty side effects. Personally, I'm avoiding meds and trying to sort it with weight loss and exercise. Anyway, good luck!

Hi miakat I'm type 2 aswell classed as obese 14:10 but following advice from these guys as spered me on and now losing wait

It's good to know, I felt like I had been cast adrift without a life jacket.
So need some ideas for meals.
Current weight 126kg so I need to know what is right for me.

Welcome miakat. Good advice from Graham. Low carbs is the way I would go. 🙂

KENTISH MAID THAT'S A GOOD WEIGHTLOSS,WELL DONExx
Thank you. I cut down on my carbohydrates, reduced portion sizes and started cooking more meals from scratch. The dog also gets longer walks as it was suggested I increase my exercise. One thing I would say is, don't look on it as going on a diet, think of it as a change in lifestyle, something that you feel you can maintain long term

Hi Miakat,
I was diagnosed type 2 a week before you, I am 55 and also need to lose weight. I am on metformin at 1000 with breakfast and again with dinner, I seem to be quite lucky in that I have not had any adverse side effects from the meds or the diabetic chocolate or biscuits :D
My advice would be to read everything you can here, there is so much to learn! I got very little from my gp other than my life would never be the same and don’t eat any sugar.....as you read other posts you will see there is so much more to it than that but there is loads of help and support here so welcome 🙂

Take a look at the "Food/carb queries" forum, especially its subforum "Recipes". Plenty of ideas there. 🙂

Hi @miakat
Firstly welcome to the forum
Lots of advice here especially as others have stated on the Food/carb forum
I was diagnosed in Sept 2017 at aged 67
Immediately put myself on a low carb/ high fat diet.
Weight loss 20 kgs but Jan2 2018, 3 months
HbA1C down from 78 to 33
Cholesterol from 4 to 3
Off Meds
Low carbs im my experience is the way to gain benefits and gain them quickly.
Good luck and please keep posting. We are all interested how you go on

There is no real need to worry about your weight - just using carbohydrate control to lower your blood glucose to normal levels, cutting out dense starchy foods and most sugars will do that for most people, and once that happens the metabolism can get back to something like normal which usually means weightloss, or at least an easier time when you try to lose weight.
