Scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico developed a topical treatment that regenerates tissue and accelerates growth.

Experts from one of Latin America's largest public higher education institutes, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), have developed a drug that will prevent diabetic patients from having their feet amputated, according to a statement Sunday by the person in charge of the project, Dr. Pedro Peña Santoyo.

"The treatment consists of a compound that has pirfenidone as its active ingrediente and it helps the healing of diabetes patients affected with diabetic foot ulcers, even those with non-healing chronic diabetic ulcers,", said Peña Santoyo, who said pirfenidone is an active substance that stimulates celular growth.
