Hello everybody, My name is Tom and new to this Forum, I have had type 2 diabetes for 13 years now and had my ups and downs along the way, I Also suffer with severe anxiety and depression so when i see reports of Type 2 Diabetics at greater risk of getting Bladder cancer and also saying slow release metformin has Carcinogens I start to panic, Any replies appreciated.
Hi @Tombat13 and welcome to the forum 🙂 You're clearly not new to T2 though and presumably manage your diabetes through meds and diet?
I've not heard of greater risk of bladder cancer for T2s. I suppose the bladder may be working overtime if the kidneys aren't playing ball, but I've never read anything about it. I have read somewhere (possibly on this forum) that metformin contains carcinogens, but I think that is metformin produced and consumed in the US. I can't believe that NICE would authorise a drug which had sufficient carcinogens to harm anyone.
However, I'm open to being contradicted because there are many people on this forum who have much greater knowledge than me, and I hope someone else responds shortly!
Thanks Vonny, And really well done with your Weight loss, I have just been told by doctor to lower my cholesterol also so i hope i can have same will power as you have.
Yes it is first I have heard about metformin. I understood that it is the oldest oral medication for D and has been around for decades. You have me worried now 😱
I have never heard anything about metformin being carcinogenic and there is nothing mentioned as a side effect. So, I don't think there is anything to be concerned about on that score.
It has been in use by many people for a long time now and there would have been some indication by now.
Let’s face it we are sometimes not informed of the true effects of some drugs. I am a cynic by nature so I will err on the side of caution although I do think things are different here than in the USA.
Can I ask those who are taking slow release Metformin do you consider your main meal to be your largest meal, or not related to size just s particular meal, i.e. breakfast lunch or dinner? Since going up to 1000mg last Friday about 10 minutes later I need to rush to the loo with little warning?
