Hi, havent been on here for a while. Prescribed extra metformin in June due to blood sugar rises. Now blood sugar readings have suddenly got worse. Currently on 2grms SR Metformin. Does anyone know why?

No my diet hasn't changed, I am lactose and wheat intolerant so have a restricted diet. I couldn't do the very low carb diet as I was starving due to my hatred of most vegetables. I had a middle year infection at the end of August but am fine now. Had my Hbc1a result today and it was 60 not wonderful but last time it was 69. Type 2 since 2011 and been on 1500mg Metformin since then until June this year and I am totally fed up of Diabetes and am starting to hate food lol

Hello @snowball12

Sorry to hear that your HbA1c is creeping up.

It is quite common for diabetes to change over time from what I can tell, and a gradual need for adjusted medication (or additional carbohydrate reduction) can be needed in some people. It’s not anything they are doing wrong it’s just the way their metabolism is changing over time.

Have you gained any weight in recent years? If you are one of the unfortunate types that has a tendency to gain weight around your middle, and some of it forms as visceral fat around your organs then you can get a disproportionate impact on BGs from relatively modest weight gain as the organs cannot operate as efficiently, and the extra weight adds to insulin resistance.

Hope you can find a way to bring your HbA1c down a notch or two either by tweaking your menu, by adjusting your meds or a combination of the two 🙂

Hi, yes I carry weight round my middle, not much but enough I guess. I think I will speak to my GP as my DN keeps saying I am doing fine. thanks

The Ear Infection have impacted the result. 60 from 69 is not too bad. If you think you already think you have a restricted diet how about reducing your portion sizes.

If you are type two you can always eat meat, fish, seafood, eggs or maybe some nuts, berries and sugar free jelly with a suitable yoghurty addition for dessert maybe? Controlling type two seems to mean never having to go hungry again.
