Hello. I am now 81 years not overweight. Diagnosed 6 or 7 years ago with type 2. Medication has been 1 gliclazide 80mg, 2 metformin 500mg 1 morning and 1 at night. After severe constipation I stopped taking metformin felt better than for some time. Started taking teaspoon of cinnamon and two chromium piccolo ate 200microg. Bg stable between 4 -6. Should I resume metformin? Anyone else stopped metformin and stabilised Bg?

Hi Shippers, welcome to the forum 🙂 What was your BG like before you stopped the metformin? Certainly, your levels now would suggest that it wasn't having a significant impact, although I believe it's one of those medications that 'establishes' itself, so the effects of stopping it may not become fully apparent for a few weeks - how long were you on it, and how long is it since you stopped taking it?

Good to hear that you are feeling better without it now. I would suggest letting your GP/nurse know about the situation as they are better placed to know your full medical history.

Hi Shippers. They are excellent levels so well done and you must have a very good Hba1c outside of diabetic range. I stopped metformin and manage my type 2 on diet alone but appreciate it may not always be attainable because my pancreas may stop helping out! On your BG levels and feeling better without it, I wouldn't be re-starting metformin any time soon.
Is your GP in agreement with this? Mine was quite happy with the decision to stop metformin.

Hi Northener
My bg was between 3.6 and 5.8. I aways measure before lunch 2.5 -3hours after breakfast. My diabetic nurse had just said that my bg readings were too low so after stopping the metformin for nearly a month the readings rose to 4.8 - 7.5. I felt a lot better in myself. I have now gone back on 1 metformin with breakfast. 2 things that bring my bg down are 1 a hot bath and 2 a cooked high protein breakfast. Diet is limited to whole meal starches such as oats and low gl food. Sri Lanken cinnamon 1 tsp and two chrome tablets with breakfast seem to control my bg. I can still eat well with plenty of veg and protein.
