Ok here's another question. I have taken Metformin since the beginning of Sept. 2011. I have been careful to take it only with meals and apart from the usual gassy side effects, have been fairly fine on it. In the last week, there has been a change where my stomach routine has become rather volatile. Is it possible for side effects to develop after all this time or can I rule that out and assume it is some other ailment?

lovetosing, I've been on Metformin for about three years and I've experienced a few gastric disturbances. For me its most often been down to combining it with dairy products, particularly milk and cheese. As cheese is one of my favourite foods I tend to take an immodium after consuming a fair bit which totally prevents the 'brown laser' from spoiling my day. Never had any lactose intolerance previous to taking metformin.

Might be worth experimenting by cutting out dairy products (if you do eat them) and see what happens.

Or ... too much carb at that meal?

I find too much carb or too much sugary food sets me off. If you are worried it is worth having a chat to your doctor. I have tablets I take when my tummy goes on an away day that help, but I think you can only get them with a prescription from the doctor.

I'm on slow release Metformin which helps a lot.

I watch the starchy carbs!

my question

thank you so much guys. I am still in the gastric nasty category as I type this. Otherwise I am ok, but it doesn't seem to matter what I eat, the reaction is the same. I ate a meal last night at a restaurant (dragged myself out even though did not feel like going) and paid for it with urgent dash to the loo the moment I got home. If anything it is worse since I posted my question. I will go to the docs tomorrow and see if he thinks it is a bug. Thanks again.
PS I have lost a pound or so since yesterday.

Hope you get it sorted....i must admit the tabs do make me run for the loo every now and again....and tummy aches etc....do you drink? only ask because sometimes makes me worse after a cheeky drink 😛

I was on Metformin for over a year, and then started to be quite sick all of a sudden but it was regular.

The consultant qucikly changed me to slow release and did say the metformin can build up after a time and it has the effect as if you have overdosed on it!

As soon as I changed to slow release, the sickness stopped.

It might be worth having a word with your GP as it could be the metformin causing it.

I hope things improve soon for you. 🙂

metformin gut problems

Thanks Lucie and Jalapino - I seem to be better now, using extra friendly bacteria capsules. No more running to the loo - but the joke's on me as for 24 hours it was the opposite situation!!! But all settling down now - I think in this case it was a bug. But I will discuss the slow release option as it sounds like it definitely helps.
