Apologies if this is a bit too early in the morning for this but how long on Metformin before the dreaded trips to the loo??? I have been on this since February with no problems so far BUT.......oh dear.....two trips on Thursday morning, two on Friday, zero over the weekend and its only 9am and I've been twice. Horrid.....not had much to eat in fact I had porridge for tea last night and am feeling queasy just now. Seeing nurse today in afternoon about things, so will add this to my list.

Add it to the list. Maybe you have got some passing bug (there is a lot of it about) and they will know if there is anything going about in your area.

Has the brand of Metformin changed recently as some people have found that certain brands of it are fine and others really upset their system. This can be a problem if your repeat prescription just says Metformin and any generic brand can be prescribed. I believe it is the fillers or coatings which cause this sort of issue for some people, so if you have recently started a new box and it is a different brand, then that might be it. However, as @Docb says, there are also a lot of bugs going around.

i was on the prolonged release version of metformin as its a bit gentler on the stomach , as normal metformin can send some people rushing to the loo 😱

Oh, I did not think of that. I have so many of the blasted boxes, I do try to keep them in rotation.......I shall look into that. Thanks

I had a rotten cold week before last and not been quite right since. Quite woozy and light headed in the morning with my BP running about 120/65. That might be normal for some but definitely not for me so I'm just not feeling right at all. Between this and my tingly toes, lack of appetite, Im struggling a tad. Not holding out much hope with the nurse , oh and I need flu jab, COVID jab, B12 jab and that RS thing as well. The joys of diabetes and getting older.

Sorry to hear you are feeling generally rough and under the weather. The time of year/lack of daylight doesn't help with a feeling of wellness either. Hope you pick up soon.

I have checked and I'm on box three of a different make from my usual brand, but would it have taken three weeks to upset my innards to this extent.? Taken some Immodium this morning and just sticking to water and not going far. Lots of loo trips, lots of rumblings and at least the three bathrooms in the house are clean!!!!!!

are you on the prolonged release metformin or just the normal one ? i had a lot of tummy problems at first when was put on this medication and i nealry didnt make it to the loo often , i mentioned this to the doctor slightly embarrased and she switched me to the prolonged release one and i had no other issues .

No, I would expect a new box of a different brand would affect you in the first week if it was going to and @CoolShot44 I believe it can happen with some brands of the prolonged release version too for some people, because it is a reaction to the coating which slows the release rather than to the metformin itself. Most people don't have problems, but it can happen, so always something to consider if you haven't had problems before and then a change of brand happens and you start to have issues.

Likely a bug in this case. Hope the Immodium, works although sometimes I wonder if the body is trying to cleanse itself of whatever is upsetting it.... so it is better out than in, so to speak! 😳Might be worth stocking up on probiotic foods for when you are over it.

My face to face was cancelled by the nurse but we had a phonecall instead which was quite productive. I am to drop the Metformin to two a day, as she thinks it could that. Could have been something fatty that I ate which I am not used to, but the Immodium has helped and I've stayed on water today, just having some fruit tea. Diabetic control she is pleased with, swap one of my BP tablets to the evening as she likes my low BP but I don't feel well with it that low. Agreed that I need another B12 jab because although I'm in normal range, it's only just, so Flu jab and B12 both booked for this Friday. I'll sort out COVID and RSV after this lot. All in, it was fine and I did not have to leave the house.

I have used Metformin for manyyears and not had issues with it, mine are the slow release ones.
The reps come in to the pharmacies and sell the particular brand of medicine that day or weej, over the years I have seen at least 7 different types of Metformin boxes!

I presume you are taking Metformin with food?
