Hi just joined . I have a stoma after having Crohn's Colitis since aged 21 and have had stoma for 30 years now . I have been diet controlled up until lockdown and not exercising much .
Doctor has ring tonight and has ordered blood test and has mentioned metformin. I said that I thought there were complications with metformin and a stoma ...is there anyone else on the forum that is in a similar situation ...thanks very much

Welcome to the forum
I think there are a few people who may be in your situation who hopefully will be along to comment. I think it may well depend if you are able to tolerate metformin as it does have a reputation for causing stomach issues so may not be suitable or recommended for you.
There may be alternatives if you really need medication rather than just a bit more attention to your dietary regime.

Thanks for the welcome . I have been told by the diabetic nurse at the practice that I shouldn't be treated with metformin. She listed other medication that were alternatives such as Saxagliptin and Sitagliptiln along with DPP4 class of medication Allogloptin but have no idea what these are .
May I say at this stage that my control over lockdown was not good but now back to work again both my weight and numbers are improving .

Yes there are now a lot more and different drugs that can be used re Type 2 diabetes - if indeed you actually need any of them once you can get back on track, work and diet-wise. I don't want to make excuses for your GP - but he was just reeling off semi automatically what he'd say to the majority of people, rather than to you personally - which is hardly comforting to you, I realise. At least the surgery nurse sounds a lot more sensible than the GP - so get the blood test done, see what that says, and take it from there as if that bit of the conversation hadn't happened. Unless of course you happen to see or speak to the GP meanwhile in which case challenge him/her on that bit - unless we give medics feedback they largely don't have a clue what havoc some of their unthinking words wreak.

Welcome to the forum @Baggie

Glad to hear you are making improvements. You certainly aren’t the only member here to have found the lockdowns over the past few years challenging!

There have been a few members over the years with experiences (or questions) about stomas. Some of them only frequented the forum for a relatively short time, but you might find some of the threads here interesting
