i want to stop metformin personally it plays havoc with me

Hi! I am also having problems with Metformin and have been on it for 8yrs,and do firmly believe it is causing my liver to swell and trying to convince Doctors about this is impossible so they say.Doctors includind Diab Specialists firmly believe it is a wonderful drug.
I am experiancing terrible effects and have been sent to a Gastrointestinal Specialist who just had a colonoscopy and gastro done on me but it has all come back clear(suggest you be careful if you need this done,as its painful and takes out all your energy afterwards) so where do we go now I wonder?
This affects the amount I can eat(very little in fact I live on a tin of soup and one jacket potato daily) and also my breathing, and I am now at my wits end. There must be something else to replace Metformin apart from Insulin as I have tried them all and have terrible side effects so thats out as well.:(

Hi Vickylou, welcome to the forum 🙂 I moved your post to a new thread so it wouldn't get 'lost'. Have you tried the alterenative forms of Metformin, like Glucophage SR (slow release)? Hope flly, thos more knowledgeable about T2 treatment options will chip in and help.

Metformin seems to affect some folks more than others, and we are all different. Do you take anything else with it? It MIGHT be something else.

I find if I eat too many carbs in one go then take metformin my tummy is out for the rest of the day.

Keep a diary of what you eat and anything else you do to see if it falls into a pattern.

I hope you feel better soon.

I have been on metformin since 2000 and it played havoc with me.. I am now taking the slow release version and am much better on them.. I am also on insulin.

Hiya well as you saw i to had issues with it and was put on the SR, im now as of last week on another pill as the metformin i felt was doing nothing , x

I'm starting to worry that it's not doing the job for me either. Since my doctor took me off the Gliclazide, my numbers have crept up again, she keeps increasing the dosage of Metformin but it doesn't seem to help. Every time she puts up the dose I get a plumbing upset that lasts two or three days. I've mentioned the slow release version several times but she hasn't listened yet, she will eventually but it's very wearing having to nag her for every little thing.

I don't want to go back on the Gliclazide because the hypos were horrible. There must be another way.
