Why can’t you swallow tablets, is it due to a medical condition? If it is then speak to your GP about liquid forms of medication. If it’s not due to a medical condition then you do need to learn how to swallow tablets to take your medication. Try taking them in a spoonful of yoghurt.

If they are slow release version then that is why they can be crushed or cut as the coating is acting as the slow release mechanism.

Hi thank you both for your help and for letting me know that there is a liquid version of metformin, which I’ve now requested off my Gp. Thanks again

You have put you are 'at risk of diabetes' so metformin seems a bit over the top at that stage and some dietary changes may be all that is needed especially as you have an issue swallowing the tablets.
Often some enlightened GP will allow a period of three months of dietary changes if at the lower end of the diabetes zone and only if not successful will medication be prescribed. Was that suggested to you?

Hi, I was pre diabetic for a couple of years, but I have just been told that I am now type 2 diabetic. I’ve been on a low carb diet for a few wks, but it hasn’t lowered my blood glucose very much. There is a family history of type 2 and both my brothers have it and have to take metformin. I’ve now been prescribed the liquid form of metformin, which I should get tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Perhaps you can change your profile to say Type 2 so as not to confuse people.
How low carb are you trying, the suggested maximum per day is 130g but some people find they need to go lower.
Have a look at this link to see how it compares to what you are doing. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Good that you have got the liquid version, I read that some GPs won't prescribe it so well done.
Were you told what your HbA1C is as that will be an indication of how much work you have to do.

Hi, sorry my profile must need updating, which I’ll do as soon as I work out how to! Some days my carbs were below 50g. My recent blood test came back at 52 and that’s eating low carb a low carb diet most of the time. Yes I’m really happy that I can get the liquid version. Otherwise I’d have to crush them and I’d be worried in case it caused nausea and vomiting? Thanks again for your help.

Sorry to hear you’ve moved from being ‘at risk’ to having a diagnosis with T2 diabetes.

Hopefully the soluble metformin will help alongside your menu changes. Are you checking your levels at home with a BG meter? It can take 3 months before menu changes are reflected in your HbA1c because red blood cells can live for 120 days, so it takes a while for them to ‘turn over’.

Try not to be disappointed with the lack of change in your A1c - hopefully your menu changes will work through into your next results?

Hi thank you so much for your help. I don’t know if you can help me with this, but my profile says I’m pre diabetic and I don’t know how to change it to type 2, as I am now?

Of course! No problem. I’ll do that for you. It’s a setting in your ‘user control panel’ (top right under your ‘S’ avatar 🙂 )

I’ve made that change for you @Stine 🙂
