For over two years I have been taking Metformin 4 x 500mg per day, spread over the day. Recently, because of bowel problems, my GP switched me to Metformin SR. Still 2000mg per day, 4 tablets ALL taken with breakfast. I have had trouble with the dispensary not being willing to give a month's supply. It turned out that they believed that 2 tablets of SR a day was the maximum. Eventually, they looked at the original prescription and confirmed that it was 4 tablets all at once. However, they have sowed doubt in my mind. Any comments?

Hi Michael, welcome to the forum 🙂 I can't help with the metformin question as I haven't taken it, but I know a lot of our members have experience of it so hopefully they will be along to help soon. The PIL (Patient Information Leaflet) for Metformin SR does suggest that the full dose is taken all at once, with the evening meal, unless advised differently by your GP - it also states the maximum dose is 2000mg:

Hi Michael.

I started on the slow release two weeks ago - my GP prescribed me one 500mg tablet for the morning and one 1000mg for the evening - 1500mg in total. Looking at the list she was going through to see what I could have, it seems there were lots of different options/combinations for what I could have. She definitely never said anything to me about only being able to have two tablets a day so I don't think that's right at all.

The 1000mg tablets are like horse pills though!

I take Metformin ✻Slow Release✻ ..500 mg after food in the mornings ..and 1000 mg after food in the evenings.

OK, it seems that my GP was correct in saying that I should take all 4 500g tablets at once. Nice to hear. My recent HbA1c dropped below 60 for the first time to 54. My recent visit to the rectal clinic showed nothing nasty in my bowels, but now I have angina. As I have always said - no matter what you do, something is going to get you!

Good to hear about the drop in HbA1c 🙂 Sorry to hear that you have other problems to deal with though, Michael :( I hope that you are able to get some good treatment.

LOL Michael - as Oscar Wilde told us, there are only two absolute certainties in life - death and taxes !
