Hiya, I’ve been taking metformin 500mg twice daily now for two weeks and I really don’t think it’s agreeing with me, I feel nauseous, shaky, tired, agitated anyone else suffer these side effects ?

Yes. Options are to stick with it and see if the side effects go away or to see GP and ask for a slow release version and see if that is better. If that does not work then talk to GP about alternatives.

Ok Docb thankyou x

Metformin can have unwanted side effects - are you monitoring your blood glucose levels and changing your diet to suit what you see?
I had very bad reactions and now rely on a low carb diet to control blood glucose in the normal ranges.

Hiya, well I went to doctors yesterday and they put me on slow release so going to see how they go!
As far as diet I’m just being mindful what I eat as I’m finding this diagnosis very overwhelming x

Hope the slow release works out for you. They did for me.

Thankyou x

Good luck going forward. For the first few months I had what I call ‘metformin tummy’. Regular horrendous runs!!! It settled eventually and happens rarely now.

@Jo7 Thanks - I found this thread useful. I also started on Metformin recently - 4 weeks ago. Initially I had no serious issues I could attribute to it and all seemed good. But last week I had a night of unpleasant bloating and acid reflux / trapped wind then next day 1 bout of the runs. Since then feeling bloated and occasionally nauseous, with dips in energy levels and appetite. A couple of younger people at work had the loss of appetite things so I assumed it was a bug. However a week later it still feels like my guts are on strike. May still be an infection, but having read your comments and the replies have booked a phone consultation with diabetic doc at our surgery to get her opinion on whether this might be normal Metformin stuff to "tough out" on the way to low blood sugar nirvana, or whether I may need a different medication. Have also lost 2Kgs since I started, which for me is a lot - now 55.5Kg, and avoiding high winds!

I'm very surprised they put you on Metformin when you are only just in the diabetic range. But have you been following a low carb diet and still see the HbA1c rising? That could be why. My HbA1c was 57 but I was given 3 months to control with diet and exercise. I'm now down to 48 and still no medication.
