Hi newbie here and only diagnosed in December last year. I have dropped my blood sugars from 81 to 38 by changing diet and with the help of Metformin. However in the past two weeks I have had severe gas and bloating which I didn't have before to the point it was really sore in the stomach and back until ..well, trump alert!

Dr today has changed me from standard metformin (500mg twice a day) to prolonged release (500mg once a day) even though the prescription says twice a day on the box. Is this normal? Or should I still be on the same dose. Anyone else had their dose effectively halved?

Yes I'm here asking questions as Dr's (sorry of any in here) are not giving support or information. Most of what I've found has been through speaking to others or Google!

Congratulations on your HbA1c 38 result.

Why not try one Metformin per day to see if that helps? Your diet is the main reason your blood glucose is back in the normal range.

I was on Slow Release from the start. My BG went from 69 at end of June to 44 in December. In February I was told to stop 1 metformin or my SGLT2. I chose to drop one of the two metformin. My hba1c is now 52. I now have low iron which may have affected the result. Given your excellent reading if you are only taking metformin to reduce to one tablet, seems sensible but an hba1c in 3 months seems sensible to check if your BG is still low. I've only had slow release and at two tablets wasn't having a problem.
I am having a review next Friday I have not seen a Doctor about my diabetes diagnosis.

Welcome to the forum @ruralscot

Hope the SR Metformin suits you better. Many folks here find it is more easily tolerated. Mostly I think people swap to an equivalent dose, but perhaps your Dr wanted to give your body the chance to get used to it a bit, as see how you got on with it?

Metformin is one of those meds that works away in the background. It does offer BG support, but several on the forum have reduced or even come off it (with their Drs agreement) as their BG management and weight improved.

Hi,

I went from 2 “normal” metformin a day, then went to 3 and body couldn’t handle it to back down to two and then because I had lowered my a1c a lot I am now on one slow release metformin a day !

Sounds similar to your doses
