I actually got to see a GP face to face this week as I'd been feeling headachy and feverish (I had done a C19 test and it was negative) and we discussed my last bloods (over a year ago) which were Hba1c 62. I'm booked in for bloods next week but he decided to increase my Metformin anyway from 1,000 mg to 2,000 mg and advised to take the whole dose once a day in the morning. I'm just wondering whether anyone else is taking the same dose and at the same time of day? Thank you.

I am taking Metformin SR 2000 g but I have to take 1 with my breakfast and 1with my evening meal .

Okay, thank you. I feel more comfortable splitting the dose, and that's what I will continue to do. Forgot to say I am also on the SR.

It seems a bit premature to increase the dose without knowing the result of your HbA1C. I always feel it is better not to take more medication than you need.
I could understand it if he said to increase if your level has not come down and you have made adjustments to your diet.

When i took 2000mg was at dinnertime in one dose. I slowly built up to 2000mg in 500mg increments though on the GPs and chemists advice to help limit the side effects.

Hi, the minimum effective dose of metformin is 1500 but the pretty usual dose is 2000. 2500 is occasionally seen but there is no added advantage above that. 500 and 1000 are just loading doses building up to the main event and to avoid tummy troubles. I've always been told to split the 2000 - breakfast and tea. Metformin has unintended consequences, a cascade of minor advantages that add up to a significant ( statistically) amount of heart protection. Very important for Type 2s.
