Metformin and kidney damage

Apparently my GP thinks the opposite. My kidney function has reduced over the past few months. He thinks this is due to Metformin. He has taken me off it and put me on Alogliptin.

Well, he should know better than me. I thought that Metformin could be a prob if you had kidney damage - build up of lactic acid - not that it could cause the damage. But he's a doctor and I'm just a schmo posting on a message board 🙂

Many medications can effect the kidneys and liver, this is why regular blood tests (full blood count) is usually carried out annually and repeated more often if the results show a problem.

I think if there was clear evidence of harm, then Metformin would not be the recommended first line treatment as a tablet for Type 2. So while there may be some risk for some people, it seems unlikely that this risk is particularly high for everyone or they wouldn’t be starting so many people on Metformin?
