Hi, I am wondering if anybody can help me to overcome the strong metallic taste I have as a result of taking Dapagliflozin and prior to that, chemo. Over the last three months, I have gradually lost the ability to eat certain foods, unfortunately, most of which are good for us but also chocolate - and I was a chocoholic! I came across something called MetaQil though it is very expensive and I don't know if it is any good? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Sounds like it would be cheaper to stop the dapagliflozin if you think that’s causing it and switch to a different medication if the side effect is causing problems?

Are you taking metformin as well, as I have heard people can get a metallic taste from that.

I am, 4 x Metformin tablets a day. I understand from the heart nurse team that Dapag is also good for my heart problems so am reluctant to stop it though they say it is probably the only escape from metallica! My food now tends to be vindaloo or spicier, lemon juiced up or smothered in chilli flakes, (chilli explosion my fave). Just found I can eat raw brocolli but not cooked!

There is quite a lot of info about metformin causing a metallic taste if you google it.
Maybe it would be better to ask about having something different instead of metformin or make some additional dietary changes.

Have you been given a means of checking for ketones @Nicknack ?

The reference to a metallic taste mentioned on Patient Access for dapagliflozin is related to the risk of DKA - which is potentially very serious and your GP surgery should perhaps have picked up on?

Does it mention metallic taste in the patient information leaflet?

You may be able to pick up ketostix at a pharmacy for £5 for a pot of urine strips, which might at least also put your mind at rest?

But otherwise you might want to consider if the taste may be related to metformin, as it is listed as a side effect there?
