Does anyone know if a nurse practitoner wants to specialise in diabetes what extra training does she need?

The Diabetes Soecioaist Nurses are qualified nurses, and they do an additional course, which extends way beyond what the nurses with a specialist interest in Diabetes does. It is a post graduate course to Masters level.
I hope that helps

My understanding of it is, that a qualified nurse needs to first be employed in a diabetes setting, whilst taking the extra degree qualification - this is the case in ALL 'specialist' qualifications, which I hadn't realised until someone we both know socially who was first a nurse then chose to work in mental health, decided to become a MH Specialist Nurse some years ago. He subsequently found he was expected to cover shifts solo so the Trust were relying on him to save them having to employ more expensive consultants or nurses, which they couldn't get anyway. That has been the state of the NHS for more than a few years.

So, anyway! - first - however on earth you do that - first get yourself affiliated to a full time diabetes clinic or at the VERY least, make yourself known to have such an interest, with them.

I think the OP may be talking about a nurse practitioner at a GP practice becoming qualified/experienced at managing the diabetics at the practice, similar to those who manage the asthmatics or eczema sufferers rather than becoming a DSN.

@AJH@BA If I am correct in my interpretation of your interest, I think a discussion with your practice manager and a call to your local hospital diabetes clinic might be the first steps.... obviously with things the way they are at the moment, they probably don't have any time to provide training or advice. If it is for yourself that you are asking, I think it is a great idea to have someone with diabetes in that role as they can speak from experience and empathy in guiding patients. I hope you are successful in fulfilling that challenge.

Welcome to the forum @AJH@BA

Are you asking for yourself? Or do you have another reason for wanting to know? I’m not sure members of the forum will have much more than anecdotal conversations they’ve had with various nurses over the years to share.

This article may give you some pointers?
