Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all. I'm going back on a pump. I used to be on the omnipod but I struggled with control on it. Been on a pump break. Now I've been offered the medtronic 640g or the t slim. I've been reading and youtubing as much as possible. If you've used both which do you prefer and why? What would you have wished you'd known before having either? Whats your pros and cons about each. And most importantly how do they compare to each other? Thanks guys.

Not used either but could have had either - in the finish I had neither from the limited selection I was offered. Stand alone or with CGM? - my CCG don't offer either the more modern Medtronic 780g or CGM - and the Tandem Rep told me to my face it wasn't much good really without a Dexcom.

We used the Tandem for a month with no sensors and it works just like any other pump, so I don’t know why you were told it was no good without sensors! You just aren’t using it to its full potential, same as the Medtronic

Refill procedure is a bit fiddly with the Tandem but apart from that we love it

Well to be 100% fair to the Tandem pump I liked what I saw of it - having first seen it in ?2010? at a DUK Big Day Out at Warwick Uni Arts Centre - so it's been a long wait - but it's brill being as tiny as originally promised - but I really really really disliked the reservoir and the fiddly filling thereof. I have far less patience with such things at 71 than I used to. And FWIW I loathed filling syringes in the years I was condemned to needing to do so - just have an inbuilt dislike of 'manual' stuff and when combined with advanced tech like insulin pumps ESPECIALLY those that do now integrate with CGMs - this just seems utterly ridiculously olde worlde!

Advanced technology paired with a sledgehammer .....

Medtronic is very good, reliable I found, and the customer service was great.

I love the tandem but I loop with dexcom (self fund).
Tandem is smaller, touch screen, yes more fiddly to fill but you soon get used to it.
I love that the battery is rechargeable (one less thing to carry around). The size difference is a great thing for me.
the clip on the tandem in comparison to Medtronic is rubbish but I’m guessing there are cases etc you could use with different ones. I’ve just got used to it.
I’ve heard that the tandem will eventually link with libre so I guess if you end up or have one then that may be a good option.

personally I’d choose tandem over Medtronic everyday now. It feels more modern and also updates can be done via a computer so it’s constantly improving.

I’ve used both, and pretty much agree with @grainger’s summary.

The tslim is newer and has additional functionality with sensors than the MM640G.

Without sensors both are capable pumps, with slight idiosyncracies / irritations (as with any pump tbh!). They both come into their own with sensors, but either would work well without.

I'm really glad you and @grainger have said this. I figured there is always going to be something I don't like. There's no perfect pump. I watched your YouTube video on filling and while it seems more work than the medtronic I'm thinking the good points outweigh this. After ally research and video watching (hello headache) I'm definitely leaning towards the t slim. Will see what else I find before committing to one.
