Hello. Recently been advised that I need Medication. Tried Metformin. But nurse has changed me to SR version. I was just wondering what amount I should be taking. They put me on 2 x 500gm twice a day. But bit of a bad reaction. Now trying 500gm per day. I expected SR to be 1 tablet a day same as my husband. Feeling a bit confused and struggling.

Hi @Annjen and welcome to the forum. Metformin is well known for having unpleasant side effects. For most people they are minor if at all and after a few days go away. For others, and it sounds that like me you are amongst that group, the problems do not clear up and things have to be changed. The two most common approaches are to start with a low dose, 500mg, and build the dose up slowly. The second is to try the SR version of metformin. SR stands simply for Slow Release and sometimes that helps the body to absorb it without the side effects. Looks like your GP is trying both approaches. Go to slow release and then build the dose up.

If you read around the forum you will find that T2 diabetes and its treatment varies from person to person so it should be no surprise for your T2 to be different to that of your husband. You just need to find what treatment route suits you.

Hope the SR tablets suit you better @Annjen

Some of our T2s on metformin may be able to offer some suggestions about reducing any possible gastric upheaval. I believe it helps to take the tabs with a fairly substantial meal, but one which isn’t too high in carbohydrates?

Thanks for the info about Metformin. I'm trying just one dose of 500gm Day and so far so good. Any more and I start to feel the side effects. But I will get there. That's good info about when to take it thanks
.i get to see the nurse in 3 weeks. They are very good at our surgery.

Presumably as your husband is Type 2 diabetic you are on message about a suitable dietary regime to manage blood glucose levels.
Do you have a home testing blood glucose monitor as that would be beneficial for you both to be able to test the effect of your meals.
This link may give you some ideas and you can compare with the regime you are following. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Ideas have changed in what is a successful way of managing to reduce blood glucose and the standard NHS Eat Well plate may be too high carb for many to tolerate.
