My parents are getting me some engraved jewellery from ICE Gems for medical ID and I just want to make sure i'm right when saying i'm "Insulin Dependent" in regards to medical requirements/treatments.

You can see examples here; http://www.icegems.co.uk/engraving-guidelines.html

I'm getting a 4 line dog tag and a 3 line bracelet, not sure what to put on the bracelet. Is my name important? They can check my wallet for that and I can have it on the 4 line dog tag.

I'd suggest including diabetes 'type' would also be a good idea (since Type 2s can also use insulin)

Not sure though, 'IDDM' (insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) seems to mean Type 1 so maybe T2's arent referred to as 'Insulin Dependent' even when they are... :confused:

We put Type 1 Diabetes Insulin dependent and our phone number on one side and K's name on the front when we got a bracelet from them last year.

Have to say the one we got became tatty quickly and the links broke - they have a short guarantee (although they dont seem to do the design we got now)

K has a silicon bracelet from here http://wristbanduk.com/shop/silicon-wristbands/medical-alert.html now, she wears it for sport and swimming which she couldnt the ice gems one. Just a though as we wish we hadnt spent all that money :(

I've got a couple of 'mediband' wrist bands, got them on line.....cheap as chips. I never take it off, it has the medical symbol on 1 side and 'insulin depedent diabetic - alert' on the other side. Available in all sorts of colours.

So i'm thinking the following;

Dog Tag 4 lines;

Name D.O.B
Type 1 Diabetic
Insulin Dependent
ICE: Name Number

Bracelet 3 lines;

Name D.O.B
Type 1 Diabetic IDDM
ICE: Name Number

Don't want to put the wrong thing as there's no going back once it has been engraved!

To be honest you don't need to put insulin dependent. All type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent 🙂

Fair point, what would you put instead then? 😛

I have a 3 line bracelet from ice gems 🙂

Mine has the following:

Name and DOB
Type 1 diabetic on insulin
ICE: dads phone number

(they couldnt fit type 1 diabetic insulin dependant) but they were really nice, they saw that i tried to place an order and because i hadnt put it through as i didnt have enough letters and dint know what to put instead of 'insulin dependant' i got a phone call from them the same day asking what the problem was 🙂

"Type 1 diabetic on insulin" doesn't fit, 1 character over :(

The same happened with me. I've had the engraving page open pretty much all day, but haven't submitted the order yet. A guy called, but I had poor signal and could barely make out what he was saying lol.

Still don't know what to put, on either now! lol 😡

Ah yeah I was thinking that 😉

Right, finally decided on what i'm getting engraved.

Dog Tag 4 lines;

Name D.O.B
NHS Number
Type1 Diabetic on Insulin
ICE: Name Number

Bracelet 3 lines;

Name D.O.B
Type1 Diabetic on Insulin
ICE: Name Number

I'm going with the 'NHS Number' because I can never find the bits of paper it's actually on when I need it. All I've got to do now is head down to the surgery to find out what it is :D

How about "Type 1 diabetes, insulin" - would that meet the character limit?

Insulin Dependent.........

That to me is the most critical information......🙂

This is just my personal opinion: I don't feel the need to clarify that I am on insulin as I feel confident that any paramedic or A&E member of staff knows that a person with type 1 is dependent on insulin.

I've just spoken to my manager who is an ex-paramedic and currently a first responder said that paramedics & medically trained staff will know that a type 1 diabetic is dependent on insulin, however in rural areas where a first responder is used (ie a first aider sent to the seen before the ambulance arrives) as they only have first aid training they may not be trained to know that, but might know it in general.

Another term you may want to consider is IDDM, it is a commonly used abbreviation for Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus
