TOO few woman consultant surgeons is the tip of the crisis in a healthcare system beginning to buckle under the strain, says Ian Ritchie of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

A TOP medic has warned that the NHS in Scotland is “a system in distress” suffering from flawed training for new surgeons.

The president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has warned that the nation’s healthcare system was in crisis with too few women consultants.

Ian Ritchie said only about a tenth of consultant surgeons are female , despite the fact that women now make up the majority of the medical workforce and represent 55 per cent of medical students.
