morning everyone, in a previous post there was a mention of having meals that don't need insulin as you are covered by your longacting insulin as i'm guessing there's no carb's in your meal. Do you have any recipes or examples of such foods that don't affect your sugars much, i'm guessing these are low or no carb foods but i wanna start lowering my carb intake for a while and see how i manage with it! Any ideas would be great! Thanks x x

Hi hellbell,
If you want to lower your carbs just carb count what's on your plate and adjust your insulin acordingly.
If someone is eating food throughout the day with no bolus and living off the basal then their basal is too high.
You still need insulin to cover protiens and fats.

Long acting insulin is for basal use only ie it keeps you steady over the 24 hours without food or allows you to eat later.
If anyone is using excess basal to avoid injecting for meals they are potentially running into a major problem if they become ill and can not eat.
Meats, not processed are are carb free as are most veg- not spuds there are a few other veg not carb free so check them out. Most nuts are very low carb. Watch peanuts though.
Eggs/cheese/cream are all carb free.
I'm sure others will add to the list for you.

I rarely eat carb free meals, but when I do, they are usually huge bowls of salad - lettuce, cucumber, spring onions, red pepper / capsicum etc, sometimes with some salad dressing or cheese - or a very low carbohydrate bowl of tomato and feta cheese or soup (any type without potatoes of noodles)

I don't tend to go for totally carb free meals unless I'm basal testing. Then would usually be an omlette, salad or stir fry.

I just realised that, since diagnosis in May 2008, I haven't had a single carb-free meal - nor have I missed a single meal. I missed meals all the time in my pre-diabetes life!

I have missed my breakfast a few times but my sugars r usually quite high by lunch time so i like to eat all meals.

i couldnt believe it when i found out cheese had no carbs, i thought that would of had and cream also.
