Hi,
I'm recently diagnosed as type 2. Some days I just don't fancy much to eat so I've thought of meal replacement protein shakes. Has anyone had these and how do you find them? Sugar levels apear low and they are slow releasing carbs so I beelive better then bread, pasta etc. Any advise is welcome xScreenshot_20241102_192300_Chrome.jpg

The only thing that can really tell you how the carbs affect your blood sugar levels is a blood sugar machine. You’d need to test before and two hours after.

Welcome to the forum
Some people use these Shakes and Soups as a their entire approach for a period of 12 weeks to give a kick start to reducing blood glucose and losing weight. Some are apparently more tolerable than others but it probably depends on personal taste in terms of flavours and variety.
People can use them as part of their low carb or low calorie approach and find it useful.
Certainly pasta, rice, bread, potatoes are high carb foods and best treated with caution and only had in small portions if at all depending on what approach you are taking.
You may find this link will give you some ideas for a variety of low carb menu plans which may suit you and be suitable depending on what if any medication you may be taking. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

I'm on the T2D pathway to remission program, based on the Newcastle Diet, currently in week five of a 12 week initial Total Diet Replacement (TDR) phase. So I'm on the shake diet.
The proper TDR shakes should give you about 200 cals and around 20 vitamins and nutrients per serving, so that 3-4 servings per day should give you your daily vitamin/nutrient requirement.
Beware shop/online shakes that claim to be "meal replacements" or Diabetic friendly when in fact they are not.
Good genuine suppliers are Shake That Weight and Altra Life, plus a few others.
I like the shakes, they are filling, quick to make and use, I have four a day and have one every 3-4 hours or so, depending on when I get up. As thats all I'm having they can get a bit boring.
NB: You are not supposed to just have the shakes on their own, without additional meals, for more than a few weeks, without medical supervision as anyone on such a low cal diet needs to be monitored.
Its helped me lose weight and stop taking T2D meds and lowered my BG. So its working for me. But others may not get on with the shakes.

I've been trying the ShakethatWeight shakes and meal replacements.

The 200 kcal shakes are basically milkshakes, so something like banana is pretty sickly.

The 200 kcal dry meals (add hot water) despite looking like something the dog would leave if its having the runs, are actually pretty tasty, and filling.

The 200 kcal soups are worthless

The 400 kcal wet meals (basically MREs) are, so far, tasty. I've got a month's worth to get through.

The weight is pouring off me, but I know this is the initial "easy" weight loss.

Surprisingly, I don't feel as hungry as I thought I would, but I suppose thats the Metformin doing its thing.

As I seem to be able to live off fresh air, water and sunlight, I have been fasting until 5pm (now 4pm after the change to GMT) having a Tesco 200calorie 20gm of carb shake, then eating a small meal and drinking some tea. I have added in a mug of coffee with cream some days just so I have the option.
I am interested in seeing if it changes my HbA1c after 8 years from diagnosis.
My blood test will be taken on Monday, so it will be interesting to see if it has made a difference, and in what way.

I am on NHS shake and soup referral with Altralife but struggling after a week due to lack of choice for soups ie two flavours. It’s amazing you lasted for so long on this!

I hated the two soups from Altralife too, so only use the shakes from them. I have supplemented my diet with some other TDR meals from "Shake that Weight", you can buy a package of meals and choose individual meals, only tried a couple, but the beef chilli and cottage pie are good. As long as you choose the TDR meals, they are the same as the Altralife ones, eg: 200cal with 20 vitamins and nutrients. (As Shake that Weight also do other meals that are not TDR.) Cheers
