Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was in the forum briefly a few years ago, and I am returning because it is time for a reboot and re-motivate of my diabetes management after a nasty DKA episode following a nasty chest infection last autumn.

Diagnosed 2001 with Type I in my early 30s, and learnt about carb counting on the UK Pumpers list. I am delighted that NHS care and support has progressed over the years such that GPs seem to be more widely sympathetic. Since diagnosed I have been on a Basal-Bolus treatment regimen.

Everything is still in working order except for a touch of retinopathy.

I am looking to switch towards a lowish carb diet, and playing with Carbs and Cals and similar tools. The aim is to be a little more aggressive with my A1c values. The value is 7.9% according to a reading taken a couple of weeks after the DKA episode, which is 59 in the new money.

Looking forward to chatting and asking (and perhaps contributing to answering) some interesting questions.

I have a DAFNE-copy course starting in a couple of weeks.

I would really like to find some people to lunch with a couple of times a month to help develop recipe/cookery skills. If anyone is interested I am in NG17.

Hi Matt, welcome (back!) to the forum 🙂 Always a good idea to reboot things, and hopefully you will find the course helpful 🙂 I look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Matt, great to have you back here. be great to hear how your DAFNE-copy course goes when you start?
Thought you may want to look through the Recipe Board if you are looking for inspiration and a place to share/develop recipes? 🙂

Hi matt did you have difficulty in being diagnosed as type 1 at that age? I have had a constant and still ongoing struggle with my diagnosis.

I would have thought that losing 40kg in 9 months would point your doctors to the correct diagnosis, Sammi, together with an A1c of 117. I think they were probably right first up, and the sooner they get it right the better before things go pear shaped.

You would think that but I have not had a great time with a diagnosis. In and out of hospital multiple different doctors. Basically been a guinea pig lol

Welcome Matt ! 🙂

I am a nutter on Google Earth & was straight on. I have been there a few times in the past to a Kawasaki dealer. C C ? :D

Absolutely agree @mikeyB - the change of diagnosis for Sammi (never have been able to understand what prompted that!) followed by such a firm reluctance to reconsider has always seemed very odd to me. Hope your new appointment sorts that out Sammi!

Good to see you back Matt.

Good luck with your new strategies and hope the education course is useful. Keep us informed about how you are getting on 🙂

The change from 1 to 2 was because the nurse I was seeing stated I was overweight, pear shaped and 30 so therefore it must be type 2 and another comment made was that I was eating too much and was offered a weekly injection to curb my appetite! A very sterotypical diagnosis made by guidelines and tick boxes not facts!
