Hi - has anyone read this book or tried their recommended way of eating -( basically a low fat plant based diet) ?

Hello and welcome to the forum @Waltonday 🙂 I would never be able to stick to that diet! Wouldn't mind the plants so much as the low fat.

As someone who is predominantly vegan now, mostly use the recipes available on Mindful Chef's website. I've ordered the frozen meals previously and gives you a good idea of the types of foods that they offer and have recipes for.

I’ve read about them online and listened to interviews. It’s quite astounding the degree of insulin sensitivity they have.

I don’t have their book but I do eat a lot of vegan meals (although I’m not vegan) and I find it helps. I have books by Michael Greger, Darin Olien, Joel Fuhrman, and a few others.

If you’re looking for recipes, the Forks Over Knives website has quite a few for free, and the Nutrition Facts website has a lot of videos and information.

I eat a primarily vegetarian diet with lots of vegan meals but that has nothing to do with diabetes.

I feel uncomfortable with the title of the book. "Mastering Diabetes" is about as likely as "Controlling diabetes" (or mastering/controlling a two year old). I try to use the term "Managing diabetes" as the other ideas suggest 100% control to me and anything less can appear a failure.
Maybe I am too sensitive but some time ago I read an article about the importance of language with diabetes care and it resonated for me. When there is a known correlation between mental health issues and diabetes, I think the power of language is often underestimated.

(Sorry, I don't mean to derail a thread about diet.)

I found Mastering Diabetes after I became vegan and they helped me understand why I was suddenly more sensitive to insulin. Even a medium fat plant based helps. Foods high in oil will usually spike my glucose levels after 3 hours. My improved insulin sensitivity has made managing my diabetes easier.

Never heard of them!

Robby (Type 1) has talked about his amazing insulin sensitivity which is a result of his diet. You might have seen Type 1s here mentioning their ratios (insulin to carbs). Usually people say they’re 1:10 or 1:8 or maybe 1:15. His is apparently 1:58!! He eats 600-700g carbs a day and only takes 26 units of insulin in total. Very impressive!

The point of their book, I believe, is to help others get such sensitivity and reduce or eliminate insulin resistance. For a Type 1, that would be less insulin, but for a Type 2 that could potentially mean reversing their diabetes.

@helli I get what you’re saying re language, but I wonder if, in this case, it was just a matter of finding a slogan or brand name that hadn’t already been used - hence the “mastering”. Reversing, beating, an end to, etc, were already grabbed by others :D
