Tonight on MC John went out.
How sad and what? Uneducated? bias?
The judges had voted him through the levels ...he has a type 1 young daughter. He has said from day one that has mission was to research and construct recipes so that his wee lass didn't feel excluded from foods that her sisters were able to eat.
He has clearly studied, experimented and refined his recipes.
Tonight's dessert was most certainly restaurant quality...the tart was judged 10/10 the small amount of 2 rhubarb garnishes and curd garnish were commentated as slightly bitter and it looked beautiful.
I really hope he does his recipe book...I really hope he finds the funding to market his products.
Wouldn't it be lovely to go to a restaurant and not have to try and work out carb intake etc.
John....if you come on here ...I for one wish you the very very best and may your wee lass stay healthy...she is one lucky girl to have you as a Daddy
If anyone caught the name of the sweetener he uses made from some sort of pumpkin I think let me know...otherwise I'll get n catch up.
Stay well all
Bev

His wee lass doesn’t have to be excluded, if you’re type 1 controlled with insulin you can eat anything you like as long as you count the carbs and get the insulin dose right. That includes sugary treats such as doughnuts and puddings if you wish. He may be trying to minimise her consumption of sugar to make the diabetes easier to control, but that’s not the same as saying she can’t eat it at all. No reason that she can’t have a pudding after her dinner when they can control the insulin.

Having said that though, his food does look amazing, there’s no doubt the guy can cook. And certainly his recipes might be well useful for type 2s who are not on insulin!

Why is he excluding her? She can already eat anything. Many restaurants give nutritional info now too and for everywhere that doesn’t most T1s that carb count are used to guessing carbs.

The problem is, that in the absence of carbs, the body breaks down Protein into glucose, before it starts burning fat for energy, so I find if I have a low carb meal, I still need to calculate insulin, and it’s a lot harder to guess just when the broken down protein will hit my system. It's much easier to eat normally, and calculate insulin. Which isn’t to say I would eat a lot of sugary stuff or a lot of refined carb on the ground of general health, but I wouldn’t be doing it because of my diabetes.
Having someone like that on a TV programme also spreads the message to others that I ‘can’t eat' certain foods, leading to ignorant comments from well meaning dinner companions etc.
