i wanted to ask the pharmacy here says after 28 days the insulin is no good to start on a new bottle has anyone heard this seems to be alot of waste
thanks again

Hi Mary, and welcome to the forum.

Yes, insulin can cope with being at room temperature for 28 days, but it stops being as effective, so you need to dispose of it. I know it can seem like a lot of waste, but you want to use insulin when it's in its 'prime', as it were 🙂

converting blood glucose levels eg http://www.onlineconversion.com/blood_sugar.htm

Many insulins are available in cartidges, usually 3ml, as well as larger vials. Much less waste, as 3ml are always used within 28 days, at least by adults with T2D. Perhaps worth asking is that would be possible for you?

Hi Mary, welcome to the forum - always nice to have someone visit from across the pond! 🙂 If you want to understand our BG readings, multiply what we say by 18 so it means more to you (I have become an expert on the 18x table after visiting US sites like dLife!).

As others have said, insulin can lose its efficacy after 28 days out of the fridge, so it's more difficult to predict how it will work. We're lucky here in the UK because all our medication is free, and whilst it's still a shame to waste things, we don't need to worry about personal cost (although we're mindful of the cost to the state). I always feel a little guilty about changing my lantus before it is finished, but I only use a small amount each day, so the 28 days are up before I'm finished!

Hope to see you around - please feel free to ask anything, we'll try and do our best to help out! 🙂

Hi Mary welcome to the forum 🙂

thanks everyone for the reply

have a chain store here that sells the bottles of insulin for $35 a bottle i use two so that is $70 but is still cheaper than regular bottles that the other stores sell for $65 a bottle
the needles are only $1.50 a box so that is good
the store also has their own meter for $10.00 and the strips and lancets are also a reasonable price so it is not two bad

i am half way between dallas and oklahoma city about a four hour drive both ways so i have never got to go to a specialist none in our area we have two general practice doctors i love the one i go to he sits and listens
so i have learned most of my info from the boards and yours are great the american ones do not have many posts

thanks again

Hi Mary,

It's really great that you feel that you can get support on here - you're most welcome, and I'm positive that everyone will be happy to help in any way they can 🙂

Of course, as with any advice you get online, you are naturally best off discussing any changes with your doctor, as though many people on here are experienced, we're not medically qualified!

It's a real shame that you've not been able to find american sites with many posts, but as I say, you're most welcome here! 🙂
