Hi I’m another newbie aged 74 with 3c following partial pancreatic section in 2021. Very new to diagnosis. Using libre, taking vitamin D and focusing on my diet and exercise. But also noting improved results with sunny weather. So far 49 days of data with HbA1c reading falling to 6.7 from 7.8.
I can see some research on line regarding vitamin D. How important is it? How reliable is the Libre?

Welcome to the forum @MarkW17

Good to read that you have the Libre already . It is so good to show patterns of what is happening throughout the day. I have not used one for quite a while but @helli posted this thread about the limitations.

There are known limitations of all CGMs which, sadly, HCP and CGM manufacturers don't seem to share so it is left for word of mouth and threads such as this thread which describes the limitations.

There is a lot to get your head round at the start. If you are happy to tell us what insulin(s) you are using it can help us in our replies to any questions that you have. No questions are considered silly on here.just ask.

HI, and welcome from me too. I take 1000 IU of Vit D on my GPs advice as my levels were low when I last had full bloods done. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone pain in adults (osteomalacia) although I haven't experienced that.

Welcome to the forum @MarkW17

Sorry to hear about your Type 3c diagnosis :(

We have a few 3cs for you to compare notes with, some of the more frequent posters are @Proud to be erratic @eggyg @soupdragon @Wendal and @martindt1606

They have experience of a number of routes in to T3c including pancreatitis, full or partial pancreas surgery, and other ops.

Are you taking Creon to help with digestion? Not sure if your partial pancreas can still cover those duties.

As for Vitamin D, there does seem to be growing evidence that it can be a helpful addition, especially if natural levels are low (which is not unlikely at our latitude. My limited understanding is that naturally derived Vit D is even more protective/helpful than any supplements, but that’s not always easy to come by. Especially during the darker and colder months of the year!

NICE published this guidance some years ago having reviewed and filtered all the available evidence at the time. I notice that ‘people over 65’ are a group who can benefit from keeping Vit D levels topped up

Hello @MarkW17, welcome from myself to a website you'd prefer to not need! My route here was from a total pancreatectomy to resolve my Pancreatic Cancer and my knowledge of pancreatitis is relatively limited. But there are c. 20 members of this forum whose route you are following, so one will be along soon. As already said it would be helpful to know what treatment you are receiving; I assume that includes insulin. But which, there are many options?

Welcome @MarkW17 from another Type 3c, due to pancreatitis in my case.
I have a multivitamin and mineral supplement prescribed (which contains vitamin D) and also a calcium and vitamin D supplement due to the difficulty with absorbing nutrients following the pancreatic damage. However I've found that my vitamin D levels have kept dropping to very low levels since the pancreatitis and I've only managed to keep them up by taking additional high strength vitamin D year round.
I feel pretty rubbish with low vitamin D levels but I'm not sure how much increasing them has helped with the diabetes.
Glad to hear you have Libre and hope you're finding it useful.
Are you taking Creon and insulin?

Hi I suppose I count as a functioning diabetic. As I also lost my spleen I am on permanent antibiotics which messes up my digestion and possibly my ability to adsorb some nutrients. But I am not taking any other medication yet. My libre (now 90 days) tells me I am 98% in range with an average is 7.4 and HbA1c 6.3. My gp has dismissed my libre results but I have a blood test tomorrow and will see a specialist once I have the results. I can see research that suggests vitamin D is an important factor.

Hi I have the blood results which had my hba1c at 6.5 (libre 6.3) so I am looking forward to what my doctor says next week. I not taking anything yet.

Hi Soup dragon.
I’m not taking anything other than vitD. My blood results have my Hba1c at 6.5 so I will be very interested to hear what my GP says next week.
