Diagnosed when she was 22, MARI WILSON explains how she keeps her condition under control and wants to inspire others to do the same.

WHEN Mari Wilson wakes up in the morning one of the first things she does is to give herself a blood test and an injection of glargine, a long–acting insulin. Then before meals and certain activities there are more blood tests and injections of fast–acting insulin called Humalog.

If Mari, 60, best known for her beehive hairdo and 1980s hit Just What I Always Wanted, failed to stick to this meticulous regime the consequences could be fatal.

Yet the singer, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 22, takes it all in her stride. "My whole life for all these years has revolved around diabetes because it has to. I'll die if I don't have insulin," she says simply.
