When Colin Waite's sons suggested they should all try to get a place in next year's London Marathon, Colin agreed as he knew they were unlikely to succeed.
And he was right about the slim chances of getting a place. His three grown-up sons were not successful - but Colin, 75, was!
Colin, of Low Road, Brigham, said: "We were having a glass of wine and a pie when my son Ben made the suggestion.
"I reckoned the chances of getting a place were so remote it would be safe to agree. I couldn't believe it when I heard I had got in."
The father of six was a county champion at cross country running when he was young but stopped more than 50 years ago, when football took over. Twelve years ago he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
