Just to say thanks to the many members who helped me when trying to set up my monitor. Today it's all gone fine, so goodness only knows what I was doing wrong yesterday, to keep getting the error code! As I suspected, my BG is high 9.8 before breakfast and 10.3 two hours later. So I'll keep testing my readings before and after food, for my next appointment. My HbA1c was 57 six weeks ago, so it looks like a low carb diet (12 pounds lost so far) and 3 hours+ exercise (Aquafit and exercise bike) a week is not going to bring it down. I strongly suspect I will be put on Metformin. This website and Forum has been wonderful. 🙂

Good to hear you have it sorted Felinia 🙂 Something to note is that a 0.5 mmol/l increase two hours after eating is excellent, in fact it's practically no difference at all, given that no two tests are ever exactly the same 🙂 Just a case now of trying to get a better number to start off with before food, and I'm sure that will come in time 🙂

You nevre know - you've only tested for part of one day so far. Maybe tomorrow will be different! I'd keep plugging away, and if Metformin is necessary for a while, so be it.

My pre-lunch was 9.2, I had a bowl of home made chicken and veggie soup, and my post lunch was 7.1. I'll do pre and post dinner (which is pork with 4 veggies). Then as you suggest on a few other days when I have different foods. I am particularly interested on how oat products and fruit affect me. I have been told NEVER to have fruit with meals, only as a small morning or afternoon snack. I've also been given conflicting info on oats: never eat it due to carbs, only eat it with nuts and seeds, eat it with boiled eggs (go figure that one!!!). But I'm feeling so much more confident now - and relieved about the 7.1!

I don't get the fruit thing?

Anyway, I don't believe in any of these rules as far as BG goes. Everybody reacts differently to different foods, and you need to test for yrself to know what's what for you.

Also, just to point out that yr reaction to particular foods can be different on different days. You really need to test over a little while to get a good handle on things.

Neither did I, and this was the training course appointed dietician! English was not her first language and we both struggled to understand each other. What she said might not have been what she meant and she certainly didn't understand, or take into account, my other medical conditions. So I have no confidence in her, or the official training course, hence using Diabetes UK and the Forum.
I know what you mean about everyone reacting differently. I'm actually an adviser for Diverticular Disease (2 years now) and that's what I'm always telling new people to that Forum. Also to keep a food diary, which I have done for years. It's just got a bit more complicated now, having to record carbs, sugars, fats, sat fats, protein, fibre and sodium as well as calories and adverse symptoms!!!
