Hi, More a question really. A few months back they said I was borderline Dbs. Then after some tests it seems Im not. i dont get mad thirsts or anything. I have a bro and a sis in 60s and 70s both type 1. Im 80 in Feb. a few months back I had a gut problem or a pain that could not be identified by scans or examination. It turned out it was possible stress. Anyway about this time I started to eat the small oranges you get in a string back. They made me feel better. The trouble is I get this hollow feeling and I have to have one. Its like smoking (I used to smoke) I get this craving. I can eat 6 to 8 bags a week and some days I will get in the car and drive to town to get a whole bunch because Im climbing the wall!!! All the doc said was you will be ok for VitC!! and there was a sugar issue but they cant give me an answer.

That is quite a lot of fruit @Mickey C45 - and it sounds as if you are a little concerned about it, but perhaps mostly because it feels like a compulsion and not something you are altogether in control of?

As a reassurance, if your family history is T1, then the sort of diabetes you are statistically more likely to develop is autoimmune, and not related to diet. That’s not to say that you could not put yourself at risk of T2 diabetes if you gained a lot of weight, but simply that eating sweet things like fruit is not involved in the development of T1.

It is common for people’s HbA1c to naturally rise in later years, were you told the results of the checks you had done in numbers? Generally 42-47mmol/mol is the range for ‘at risk of diabetes’, and 48mmol/mol or over for 2 checks confirms a diagnosis.

Ok, thanks for reply.
I am overweight but I cant shift it. I was 32 waist in 2004 with an increase to 34 into my 60s I retired 2010 very active and restored a car!! and worked at the car auctions for something to do. My first Heart attack was 2017 and then it all went wrong. I hurt my back and was laid up 9 weeks. As I recovered lost all interest in hobbies ( was a Military reenactor all periods with lots of mates )
I found it difficult to get about and was gaining weight. Even so I dont have a voracious appetite. One meal end of the day. I have the oranges during the day. Some days 6/8 some days only 2. Maybe a banana. We have maybe some toast mid morning and a few cuppas during day. I do like beer. Im only normal. However maybe two pints every 6 weeks when we have a catchup with some family members. I do have cans in the house but I can take it or leave it.
I am on heart meds having suffered several H/As resulting in 3 stents. Plus a few meds for life. Thyroid quit end of the 90s so Im on Levothyroxin. Oh also a type of statin. I have a left knee and lower back issues if standing/walking too long/too far. In all fairness im approaching my 80th.
it was my Sisters concern over the oranges and DBs that prompted the question. She works for NHS is very 'up' on bloods and DBs so I get it in the ear all the time.
As for my bro in Australia he is also well up on DBs Interestingly he has an alcohol problem and my Sis when in Oz also would over do the drink. I think this added to their risk of DBs. No ther persons on my mothers side or my fathers side have DBs and no history in extended family. Regards Mike.
